Conquering Indecision

The best bit of advice I ever got…besides ‘get rid of that moustache!’

It was back in the day when I was a young whippersnapper contemplating my first ever job change.

I was weighing up all the possibilities…
❔Is it right for me?
❔Will I like it? What if I don’t?
❔Will it work out? What if it doesn’t?
…and all the other pros and cons (mostly the cons!).

I remember being in this big room with with a long time mentor of mine and he said to me – while pointing at this big door on the far side of the room – “If you want to know what life is like on the other side of that door, you need to walk through the door. You can’t work it all out from here”.

This instantly struck a chord with me. I saw how this type of overthinking had held me back in other situations as well.

And it is a memory and metaphor I have come back to many times in my life when facing important decisions. My first reaction is still to over think in some situations. However, my second reaction is to bring to mind the conversation in that big room all those years ago and act from there.

My key take away?

Life is full of opportunities but it can be very easy to see what might go wrong if we take them. Ultimately, we won’t experience what it will be like until we ‘walk through the door’. It’s also important to remember that when we do walk through the door, it is very unlikely that it will turn out anywhere as bad as we initially imagine!
