The best formula for success

27 February 2026

The formula for success is the same as it has always been – and always will be.

Focus on what you want…
➕ Keep taking action towards achieving it
➕ Navigate the inevitable bumps and bruises you will encounter along the way.

Simple in theory. Not always easy in practice.

What makes it harder today is the constant stream of hyperbolic, negative messaging that surrounds us. This can unconsciously take us off course.

If we believed everything we see online, in the news or on social media, we can easily think we are all doomed.

This is not true.

Negativity ‘sells’. It generates clicks and gets attention. But it also distorts reality and, over time, can erode our sense of optimism.

Because in reality:
➡️ Most people do more right than wrong.
➡️ Most teams do more right than wrong.
➡️ Most companies do more right than wrong.
➡️ There are many fantastic examples of innovation, success and generosity in business and the wider world in general.

So we need to be careful about what we allow into our minds.

The good news….
✅ It’s possible
✅ It’s a skill
✅ And it can be learned.

This same pattern also shows up in how people talk about AI. One of the most common exaggerations is the idea that AI is going to take everyone’s job.

It isn’t.

AI will change many things. Some jobs will disappear and many will be transformed. However anyone who claims to know exactly how AI is going to unfold is kidding themselves.

One indisputable fact is that success has never been only about efficiency and productivity.

Top achievers succeed due to their ability to demonstrate good old human capacities such as:
💡 Exercising good judgement
💡 Wisdom (vs. knowledge)
💡 Clear thinking
💡 Decision making
💡 Ingenuity
💡 Calmness under pressure
💡 Handing setbacks

These qualities were pivotal in the past. They are pivotal today and they will be pivotal in the future.

So, as with most things, it is all about balance.

Yes – embrace AI, build your AI skillset and explore the possibilities it offers. This is non-negotiable.

However, don’t lose sight of the human factors that have always separated the very best from the rest. They will be your superpowers this year and every other year so make sure you – and your companies – invest in the ability to demonstrate them.
